Why You Might Want Custom Software

Have you ever considered custom software for your business? The idea may not be as strange as it might sound initially. There are a number of reasons it may be worthwhile, though naturally needs will vary depending on the type of business you operate, and its uniqueness.

First of all, think about your current operations. Do you use computers and software at all? If so, how are they used? Are you satisfied with the usability and effectiveness of the software?

All businesses generate data, if nothing more then customer lists. This data is valuable resource. Mining and using this data for marketing and targeted advertising can provide significant returns on investment. Keeping track of which customers need your services and when, and knowing you will never miss an opportunity to make you services available to your customer when they most need it is just one of the benefits of mining this data. Keeping track of customer satisfaction is another way this data can be invaluable.

Your data may be on paper, in your head, in a spreadsheet, document or database. Is your data well organized, readily accessible to all who need, easily updated, consistent, and not unnecessarily duplicated?

Are there ways in which software that better manages your data might make your business more efficient? Ways in which software that more closely matches the workflow might make people more productive and comfortable using it?

Custom software provides increased control over the software you use, and decreases your reliance on “one size fits all,” upgrade-happy vendors. It may reduce your total cost of ownership (TCO), as there would not be per user licenses as is often the case with other software. You own the source code and can have it modified exactly as you wish, if needed in the future. It gives you flexibility. Your costs may also be reduced through efficiency introduced by software that fits your needs better.

Custom software can help increase sales by helping you manage, process, and react to data more effectively. It can be used as a point of advertising if it is software that will be seen by the public, displaying your logo or sales-related information.

Perhaps you do things in a distinctive manner that no –off the shelf software can readily be adapted to handle. Perhaps you can adapt– of the shelf software and muddle through with it, but it’s leaving something to be desired. Perhaps some people enter data in one way and other people in your firm enter the same basic data in another, making it inconsistent and hard to share. Customizing can give you better consistency and integration across your organization.

These are some things to think about. You might never have considered custom software as a possibility for your business, but it may be just the ticket. Think about it.
